Yankees/Rays Pennant Race Is Killing Me Slowly, But Surely

Jets lose in miserable fashion, and the Yanks fall out of first place for the first time in a minute this season and bada bing bada boom it felt like colonoscopy night in my house. Actually, it felt more like I was having my insides examined with a rusty shovel or some horrific shit like that. Listen, the Rays are a fucking sensational team. I've said it once, and I will certainly be saying it again. They pitch, they hit, they have a great bull pen, role players for days, and they are immensely tough at home in front of their 200 fans that show up. Sense the sarcasm at the end? Well, it boggles my mind that they can create such a dominate home field when they can't get fans to show up. Still, this squad is for real and nothing was more indicative of that then Rays pitcher David Price matching the Yankees ace CC for 8 + innings of brilliant hurling.

Although I could easily make a big deal out of the Yankees temporarily losing their hold atop the AL East standings, it's safe to say that isn't even the biggest issue. Sure the Yankees want to secure home field throughout the AL playoffs, but the bigger issue is where did the hitting go? 1-6 might as well not have even showed up last night. Where did the sense of urgency go? Where's the hunger? When you're the best, everyone's gunning for your head. Sometimes that drive to take down the champ is the only element missing from a championship caliber team. Last night the Rays looked like they finally figured that out, and for once I must admit the Yankees looked bewildered and helpless. Not exactly two things that I associate with "Defending World Champs."
