The Midday "Munch" Box: Jets Hard Knocks Was Pretty Sick
The New York Football Jets edition of HBO's Hard Knocks premiered last night and it did not disappoint. Since the announcement that the Jets would be taking part in the 5 part documentary series, it seemed to me that this would be the perfect fucking team to show to the world. A hungry group of ballers, who are spreading the word of "Superbowl or bust." This squad hasn't had legit expectations entering a season basically since 1998 with Vinny and the gang, but we all got a sneak preview last night of what this 2010 ball club could all be about. Also, anyone who didn't expect this to pretty much be the Rex Ryan show is off the reservation. Besides being a brilliant defensive mind, he's got guile, and the perfect amount of swagger to head this Jets squad. Both on the field, and on the show. Rex Ryan is damn good at what he does, and he wants to show the world what this football team is all about.
HBO did a great job at showing Ryan's makeup as a coach, and for me 3 elements of his personality stuck out:
1.) Motivational Tactics - Rexy knows how to connect with his players on every level. The players respond to him, because he know's how to extract the most out of their talent. His motivation is unparallel. Goes to newly acquired LT and gives him a fucking packet of articles that all have said the Jets signing of the former all pro is retarded. Saying Tomlinson is washed up and done. Rex knows what will get his guys to ignite on gameday; and what better then an encyclopedia esque collection of naysaying writing on one of his new guys? Love it.
2.) Food Lover - We all know Rex is a body of a man. When he runs, no one's neck fat giggles like him. Fact. So what ever happened to that off season stomach surgery he had to make him eat less? Yeah, not sure that worked because he's still ENORMOUS. Jesus H Christ. It's hysterical though to see him snagging cookies during film sessions. But what's the deal with the half cup of crackers for big man Rex? I thought he was just going to swallow the girl whole who gave him such a skimpy snack.
3.) Honesty - Bottom line is Ryan is another human being like all of us. The only difference is he a really smart football mind, who weighs like 700 pounds. But in all seriousness, when he approached Revis' room which was obviously empty, nothing was more appropriate then when Rex said something along the lines of "I miss you, please come back." Rex is right. He will say all the right things, like the team is going to be ready without him, but there's no denying the Jets are NOT the same squad without the best corner in football. Real chatter.
