Sports  - The New York Post is reporting that even though Jeter, who has helped the Yanks win five World Series championships, is fully expected to re-sign with the team, there are a few things that could make negotiations difficult, such as "annual salary, length of contract, and a possible position change." The paper also notes that Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner went on sports radio Tuesday to say that the negotiations "could get messy."

Let me ask the good people out there. What has to be so messy about this situation? It's Derek Jeter. DJ, El Capi-tan, the shortstop #2, the lady killer, the franchise, the man the myth the legend. It's Derek fucking Jeter we're talking about. I understand that the Yanks front office brass has a ton on their plate this offseason, there's no question. First you got Mo, and how long he wants to come back for. But he's literally still the game's best closer so he deserves that kinda deal. Pettitte is a year to year guy at this point and honestly he's 50/50. Dude can still bring it but maybe he wants to hang em' up for his kids and wife. After all, the grind of a 162 game schedule kinda makes it hard to be a dedicated family man like Andy wants to be. Dude just wants to slay the Mrs all day and have catch with his kids. But does he come back for one more run?

Well the Yanks pursuit of Lee could have everything to do with that question. Maybe Andy shuts it down when he sees the Yanks lock down arguably baseball's biggest game pitcher. Or maybe it motivates him to make one final run at title #28. Could work both ways. So while everyone and their bastard child knows Lee is at the top of the Yanks free agent list, Jeter's situation just has to be as smooth as possible. Give the guy a fucking lifetime deal for god's sake. I mean after he's done with his storied career besides making an army of perfect offspring with Minka, he's almost undoubtedly going to be closely associated with this organization. Whether it's as a coach, scout, front office guy or just strait pimp daddy, DJ is never shedding his pinstripes.

So save the mess. In fact, there's already going to be enough mess when every Yankee fan is collectively shitting themselves sweating out this new contract and the process that seems to be inevitably rocky. I just don't want a repeat of the Torre situation. Get the deal done.
